Belaruskali

One of the world's largest potash producers, mining and processing sylvinite ore in the Soligorsk region of Belarus.

Company overview

Belaruskali is the state-owned Belarusian potash producer based in Soligorsk in the Minsk Region, operating six mines and four processing plants and ranking among the world's largest producers and exporters of muriate of potash. Its product line covers standard and granular potassium chloride together with food and industrial salt by-products, and its output has historically represented a large share of both Belarusian export earnings and global potash trade.

Sanctions imposed by the United States and European Union from 2021 and the termination of Belarus's rail transit contract through the Lithuanian port of Klaipėda in February 2022 severed the country's main export corridor and cut output sharply. Production recovered from roughly 4.5 million tonnes in 2023 to about 7 million tonnes in 2024, a rise of around 56 percent that was the largest increase among the world's potash-producing countries, though still below pre-sanction levels.

Exports have been rerouted through Russian ports and by rail to China at materially higher logistics cost, with China becoming the dominant destination. The company remains the largest operator in a Belarusian potash sector that, together with Russia, accounts for roughly 40 percent of global potash exports, keeping its production recovery a central variable in world fertilizer pricing.
