Profertil S.A.
Profertil S.A.
Argentina's principal urea producer, a joint venture between YPF and Nutrien, supplying nitrogen fertilizer to Argentine and South American agriculture.
Company overview
Profertil S.A., founded in 1996, is Argentina's sole producer of urea, operating a fully integrated production complex at Bahía Blanca with annual capacity of approximately 1.3 million tons of granulated urea and 790 thousand tons of ammonia. Its equity was split evenly between Nutrien and the Argentine energy company YPF, and in 2025 Adecoagro announced an agreement, in partnership with Asociación de Cooperativas Argentinas, to acquire Nutrien's 50 percent stake for approximately USD 600 million.
In 2024 the company produced 1,332,417 tons of granulated urea, the second highest output in its history, and 810,663 tons of ammonia, while selling 1,251,160 tons of urea in the Argentine market. Total invoicing reached USD 667 million, of which domestic urea sales contributed USD 584 million, and net income was USD 206.9 million. The company supplies roughly half of the local fertilizer market and benefits from direct access to natural gas, which accounts for about 60 percent of urea production cash cost.
The complex sits at the port of Ingeniero White with a network of storage and distribution hubs across Argentina, including Puerto General San Martín, San Nicolás and Necochea, and the plant draws about 60 percent of its energy from the Los Teros windfarm under a long-term renewable supply agreement with YPF Luz.
