Potash Fertilizer钾肥

A potash fertilizer is one whose primary function is to supply potassium. The main products are potassium chloride and potassium sulphate. Potassium activates numerous enzymes and is involved in sugar transport within the plant, improving stress resistance and quality. China's potash resources are relatively scarce and the country depends heavily on imports.

Key points

  • The main products are potassium chloride and potassium sulphate. Potassium chloride has the higher potassium content and lower cost per nutrient unit; potassium sulphate is more expensive but chloride-free and suited to chloride-sensitive crops.
  • Global potash resources and capacity are highly concentrated in a small number of jurisdictions, giving the market an oligopolistic structure.
  • China has long been among the world's largest potash importers, and equity capacity abroad is seen as one route to improving its bargaining position.
  • Potassium mobility in soil lies between that of nitrogen and phosphorus, and leaching risk exists on sandy soils as well.
