Microbial Fertilizer微生物肥料

A microbial fertilizer is a product containing specific living micro-organisms that improve crop nutrition or promote growth through their metabolic activity. By function it is divided into rhizobial, nitrogen-fixing, phosphate-solubilising and potassium-solubilising types; by form into solid and liquid products.

Key points

  • The core indicator is the count of viable micro-organisms, usually expressed in hundred-millions per gram or per millilitre. A failed microbial fertilizer is more often deficient in viable organisms than in nutrients.
  • It cannot replace chemical fertilizer: it supplies functional micro-organisms rather than macronutrients.
  • Shelf life is short and storage temperature and humidity directly affect survival, which is why expiry dates and storage conditions are normally declared on the package.
  • It must not be applied together with fungicides or strongly acidic or alkaline materials, which would kill the functional organisms and nullify the product.
