Nitrification Inhibitor硝化抑制剂

A nitrification inhibitor is a compound, such as DMPP or DCD, that slows the conversion of ammonium nitrogen to nitrate nitrogen in soil, reducing nitrate leaching and gaseous nitrogen losses from denitrification.

Key points

  • It acts on soil nitrifying bacteria, slowing the conversion of ammonium to nitrate and thereby reducing leaching and denitrification losses.
  • It is commonly used in fertilizers containing ammonium nitrogen, such as urea, urea-ammonium nitrogen fertilizers and ammonium-bearing compounds.
  • Effectiveness is strongly temperature-dependent: nitrification is already slow at low temperatures, so the marginal benefit of the inhibitor falls accordingly.
  • It is a synergistic material, and adding it does not change whether the product requires registration or filing under China's fertilizer registration rules.
