Plant Biostimulant生物刺激素

A plant biostimulant is a substance or micro-organism that stimulates plant nutrition processes, improves nutrient uptake and use, or increases stress tolerance, but whose primary function is not to supply nutrients. The category includes humic substances, amino acids, seaweed extracts and microbial preparations.

Key points

  • The defining boundary is that supplying nutrients is not its primary function: if the effect derives mainly from nutrient content, the product is a fertilizer rather than a biostimulant.
  • In the European Union, plant biostimulants are established as a distinct product function category by Regulation (EU) 2019/1009, and claims must be substantiated by evidence.
  • In China, most biostimulant substances are registered or filed under the product standards for water-soluble or microbial fertilizers; there is as yet no separate unified standard.
  • Effectiveness varies greatly with crop, growth stage and stress conditions, and poor reproducibility of trial results is the most common criticism of this product class.
