Stabilized Fertilizer稳定性肥料

A stabilised fertilizer is one to which a nitrification inhibitor or urease inhibitor has been added during manufacture, slowing the transformation of nitrogen. It is a product-category concept and differs in mechanism from slow and controlled release fertilizers, which control release by physical coating or chemical combination.

Key points

  • The mechanism differs: a stabilised fertilizer uses chemical inhibitors to slow nitrogen transformation, whereas a slow or controlled release fertilizer uses physical coating or chemical combination to control release.
  • The two therefore fall under different product standards and are judged on different criteria: inhibitor type and content for stabilised fertilizers, the nutrient release curve for slow and controlled release products.
  • Because no coating is required, the cost increment of stabilisation is generally lower than that of coated products, giving a better cost per nutrient unit.
  • The degradation rate of the inhibitor determines the effective period, and the declared period should match the persistence of the inhibitor.
